The Colony’s Live Stock.

Summarising the pastoral statistics, the New Zealand Trade Review says : —The year shows an increase of 132,884 head of cattle, 32,851 swine, and 11,763 horses, which constitutes a set-off against the decrease of 1,388,000 in sheep. It is specially satisfactory to see the increase in the number of swine, in which the previous year exhibited a decrease of over 30,000. The increase is in each case larger in the North Island than in the South, both numerically and proportionately. This is especially the case as regards cattle and swine, the dairy industry being strong in the North Island, as the grain industry is in the South. As compared with, the year 1901-2 the North Island exhibits an increase of 185,671 head of cattle, 15,802 swine, and 11.547 horses • the South Island showing in the same time an increase of 46,092 head of cattle, a net decrease of 13,239 swine, and an increase of 7,547 horses. Auckland shows the highest numbers in each class—cattle, swine and horses. Wellington takes second place in cattle and swine, but only fourth place in horses, being exceeded in this line by both Otago and Canterbury. As to the favour shown to the various breeds of pure-bred cattle, we find that shorthorns equal -twice the number of all the other classes combined, and exhibit an increase of 3,400 on, the previous year. In other pure breeds the numbers do not show change, two classes, Poled Angus and Ayrshire, exhibiting a falling off.
