The Pacific Cable.

Sir Joseph Ward, interviewed at Wellington on Tuesday, regretted that Australia had not agreed to Sir Sandford Fleming’s proposal to popularise the Pacific cable by granting press concessions in order to familiarise the general public With the service. Canada and New Zealand had acquiesced in the proposal, but nothing could be done without the consent of Australia. Sir Joseph Ward is satisfied with the support accorded the service by New Zealand, commercially and otherwise, though more might be done. Sir Joseph thinks that eventually something will be done in the direction indicated by Sir Sandford Fleming. In accordance with the mail proposals carried last session the Government is now negotiating with a view to getting the Vancouver steamers, which now go direct to Brisbane and Sydney,' to call at New Zealand.
