Land Settlement.
LARGE AREA TAKEN UP IN TARANAKI.
Aboht. 31,01)0 acres of land, in seventy-five sections, in O’Hura country and adjoining, out of 61,000 acres offered, in 115 sections, were applied for on Friday at the Crown lands ballot at New Plymouth. One section had 108 applicants. The courthouse was crowded with a good class of settlers. Ic is anticipated the bulk of the remaining sections will be taken up in a few days. The Commissioner of Crown Lands specially warned speculators fc keep out of the ballot, as the Board would adopt strenuous measures to keep them from trafficking in any land acquired. Bona fide settlers would have every encouragement. Mr Jennings, M.H.R., and Mr McCluggage acted as scrutineers. On Thursday, a cash sale of township sections in village settlements in the King Country took place at the Crown Lands Office; A very large number were sold. Buyers showed a special fancy for Mangaroa township. Some allotments there realised three times the upshot prices.
