The Birth Rate.
-The Premier, at a meeting at Lawrence on Thursday night, had a few words to say relative to the New South Wales Commission’s reference to the New Zealand birth rate. In 1903 he said the excess of births over deaths in this colony was 13,301, the largest since 1885, which went to show that the Commission’s reproach on New Zealand was, to some extent, removed, Mr Seddon said that one remedy for the evil, above all other things was to make the country prosperous. Give the opportunities to the people and at once an increase would be noticed in the- marriage and birth rate. The sovereign remedy was to put the people on the land. It was, the Premier said, wonderful the number of children the farmers have. Marriage was not a failure in the country districts of New Zealand.
