Hotel Licensees Fined.

ONE JOURNEY ONE DRINK.

Metzger, Whealler and Tullocb, publicans at the Bluff, pleaded guilty lately to charges of selling liquor to

bona fide travellers, not “ arriving from a journey," on a recent Sun* j day. Fines of JS2 were imposed onj each and the licenses to be endorsed. The cases were similar to others heard up North, wherein the Appeal Court held that a traveller was entitled to one drink only, and that on “arriving” from a journey. The persons served by Bluff licensees had gone from one hotel to another, and in reply to the usual question had said that they were travellers. Mr Hanlon, who appeared for the defence, said that the offenders had misinterpreted the law. He also pointed out that the judgment of the Court of Appeal was that of a bars majority, Justices Dennisfcon’s and Edwards's reading of the Act being that “ arriving" did not bear the construction put upon it by the majority.
