Operations of Burglars.
A most daring robbery in Albert street in a house tenanted by Bandmaster Hunter, who was absent, leaving his wife and two daughters at home, occurred at Auckland on Sunday night. Mrs Hunter saw a figure walk straight to a basket containing £5 or £6 and jewellery valued at £4O, seize it and rush away. She jumped out of bed, but the burglar had left the doors open and effected an easy retreat. The basket minus the money, with the jewellery untouched, was found in an adjacent yard. About midnight on Saturday Constable Skinner, hearing a suspicious noise in the doorway of the shop of Wm. Clarke, chemist, of Victoria street,- accosted a man there who asserted he was the owner of the premises. The constable discovered that the door had been forced. He closed with the man and after a desperate struggle handcuffed him. The prisoner was subsequently taken to the lock-up where he gave the name of George Ashton. An unsuccessful attempt was made to burglarise the Post Office, Strand Arcade, Queen street, on Friday night.
