A Peculiar Case.

A rather extraordinary case was before the Supreme Court, in Banco. Some time ago Otto Hardigafi, alias J. C. Adams, contracted a debt for £4 with an Invercargill tailor. Subsequently Hardigan was sentenced to a term of imprisonment, and was handed over* to the custody of Mr Bratby, gaoler. He had £8 in his possession, which was handed to the gaoler. The tailor sued for the money, and subsequently applied for an interlocutory summons against the gaoler as subdebtor. Bratby did not proceed to Invercargill, and Mr McCarthy, S.M., issued an order under a judgment obtained by a judgment creditor. The next step was the appearance of a bailiff trying to get into the gaol. The motion on Wednesday was for a warrant restraining the judgment creditor from proceeding, on the ground of want of jurisdiction of a Stipendiary Magistrate It may be mentioned that Hardigan escaped some time ago from the hard labour gang, and has never been recaptured. He is not likely to seek to reclaim his money.
