Fatal Accident at Masterton Show.
HORSE AND RIDER KILLED
A tragic accident occurred at the Masterton Showgrounds on Tuesday. D. McLeod, a Maryborough settler, was riding a horse called The Stockman in the leaping competition steeplechase style, when the animal, going at top speed, struck the last hurdle—a brush fence heavily with his knees, and turned a complete somersault, landing in a heap on top of his rider, thirty feet away. Neither stirred, and when the spectators rushed to the spot both were lying still, and dead, in a pool of blood, having apparently broken their necks. The horrified spectators at once dispersed, and the show was postponed till the following clay.
