Mr Redmond’s declaration that the Nationalists in accepting the Land Act did not accept it as an alternative to Home Rule elicited the reply from the Hon. G. W/ndham that the measure was passed exclusively as a sense of duty, and W«uld be shortly amended so as to make everything within the 'ct clear, Tb;e Government were unable to initiate a Catholic University unless under a common agreement. There was already a marked tendency towards such an agreement. Mr Wyndham emphatically negatived the demand for Home Rule. Moreover, he said, under Home Rule Ireland would have been unable to meet the financial provisions of the Land Act, 1903. There were already a hundred and thirty-five agreements made, embracing 3070 holdings and involving advances amounting to a million and a half. The subject was ultimately dropped after Mr Redmond had passionately protested at the refusul to give self-government.
