Collision in Auckland Harbour.

STEAMER SUNK', A MIRACULOUS ESCAPE. While manoeuvring near Rangitoto Reef, Auckland, to get alongside the mail steamer early on Tuesday morning, the Harbour Board’s oil steamer Huaka was run into, amidships on starboard side, of the mail steamer. The launch swung under the steamer’s bow and was capsized, sinking in a minute. The engineer, Barrivell, had a miraculous escape, getting out just as the launch disappeared below the water. The captain, mate and engineer were dragged down to a great depth, but all reached the surface and grasped the life-buoys thrown to them from the steamer and were rescued after being in the water for ten minutes. The steamer proceeded on her way, the crew of the launch and pilot pulling to town in one of her boats. The vessel lies in about seven fathoms of water, and will probably be raised. The hull was not much damaged as the steamer was going very slow when the collision occurred. The Kuaka was worth £2500 j tonnage, 25 tons; length, 75ft by beam. The captain of the launch and the harbour pilot have been suspended pending an inquiry.
