A MYSTERY OF THE VELDT. ALLEGED MURDER OF A TREASURE SEEKER. A sensational trial is proceeding in Johannesburg, Phillipus Swartz being charged with the murder of a man named Vanniekerk while searching for gold and diamonds, which were hidden in the veldt in the Northern Transvaal during wartime, Vanniekerk married Swartz’s be throthed while Swartz was a prisoner of war. The Crown allege that Swartz shot Vanniekerk twice m the back and thou returned to camp, pretending that he had lost Vanniekerk while hunting. An Australian bushman named Colville, one of the treasure hunting party, states that six weeks ago he found a parcle of diamonds in the veldt through indications given by Swartz. The defence alleges that lions killed Vanniekerk.
