AVENUE ROAD FOOTPATH WANTED.

TO THE EDITOR OP THE MANAWATU HERALD. Sir, —Kindly allow me through your columns to draw attention to the disgraceful state of the north side of the Avenue Road between Manchester House and the tanks. Whilst an excellent footpath has been made for the whole distance on the opposite side of the street, the north side has been totally neglected. This part of the road has never yet been formed and is full of holes, some of which have been made by the Council’s surfacemen. In wet weather these holes are filled with water which drains into the houses and backyards on the north side of the street. I have put up with this intolerable nuisance for some years, always hoping that something would be done to remedy the evil. Apart from the mere question of inconvenience, to constantly live under such insanitary conditions is most prejudicial to health, and my health has for sometime past suffered severely in consequence. The least that we can expect in return for our contribution to the Borough funds is that our premises should be saved from unnecessary injury resulting from Council’s inexcusable neglect to attend to the proper construction and repair of roads and streets which are supposed to be under its care. As one of the ratepayers of the Borough I am entitled to expect that some part of the funds being spent on other improvements should go towards the remedying of this serious state of fits. I am* &c., Ratepayer. oxton, 3rd Sept., 1903;
