Sunday Trading.
PUBLICANS COURTING PRO-
HIBITION.
A country hotelkeeper in the Gilborne district was fined £lO and costs £2 3s for Sunday trading. The evidence showed that four men went into the hotel and Were supplied with drinks. They went m and out of the four subsequent occasions within one hour, being on each occasion supplied with drink.
Three of the witnesses were each supplied with five pints of liquor, two being intoxicated when leaving the hotel.
It was not disputed they were bona fide travellers, but Sergeant Siddells contended that a .traveller may be supplied with drinks on hie arrival from a journey only and the Magistrate supporting this view, held that the second and subsequent sales were illegal. “A more disgraceful case than this,” said Mr Barton, S.M., “I have never heard, men having through drink, been led to commit offences, lam quite satis* f. fled Sunday trading is carried on in this district to a considerable extent, and when atcharge is proved I shall make the penalty substantial. Many . of the publicans appear to be court* ing prohibition and they trill as* aaredly get it if the present state of things continues.” Hie. Worship ordered the conviction tb he endorsed on the license.
