The America Cup.
RELIANCE WINS AGAIN*! The third heat for the America Cup was won by the Reliance. A CLOSE CONTEST. A Yacht Club cable, via the Pacific cable, reports that the Reliance won by 52 seconds. The official time for the finish of the race was:—-Reliance, 2hrs 15 mins SOsecs; Shamrock, 2hrs 20nunt lOsecs. DETAILS OF THE RACE.
At eight o’clock the wind was south-easterly, there being a 7-knot breeze and a smooth sea.
Betting was 8 to 1 on the Reliance and was freely given. The Shamrock’s re-measurements, with anchor and chain aboard, did not alter the time allowed. The Shamrock’s hull rivets were tightened,, they having been started slightly by the strain in Saturday's thrash to windward.
The course was triangular. The Reliance crossed the lino 84 seconds ahead.
There was a five-knot wind. After going for 50 minutes the Reliance was 700 yards ahead. . The wind strengthening, and the Shamrock getting to windward, she reduced the lead to a quarter of a mile.
The Reliance still led when passing the first mark, and had increased its lead at the second. A south-westerly breeze, at this stage, livened matters up and some spirited reaching took place for the finish. The Shamrock was favoured by the breeze and held to the Reliance splendidly.
