■ : ATTEMPTED MURDER AND SUICIDE. On Saturday afternoon at Dannevirke a railway enginedriver named McCluckie attempted to shoot his daughter and afterwards to commit, suicide. Molduekie used a revolver and the girl, immediately on seeing this presented at her, covered her face with her hands. The bullet passed between her fingers and struck her head, traversing the skull for about 3| inches and then glanced off without inflicting serious injury. The man then turned the revolver on himself and fired, the bullet striking his forehead, but failing to penetrate the bone. McCluckie has been arrested and placed under medical care. RESULT OP A DOMESTIC QUARREL. McCluckie was, until a month ago, employed at the Phoenix mill, but has been out of work since. The quarrel started after dinner, between McCluckie and his wife. The daughter, on returning from work, entered the house and found the quarrel in progress. McS.'luckie put up the revolver, intending to fire at his wife, and the girl rushed between to save her mother. McCluckie fired, and the bullet passed through the girl’s fingers and struck her head. Ho then fired twice at his own head, one bullet entering the skull. Dr Reid Mackay, assisted by Dr Saunders, extricated the bullet from McCluckie’s head. The bulletentered the forehead an inch above the root of the nose. The revolv:' was a small electroplated seven-chamber weapon. All the chambers were loaded, three having been discharged. The wound is not dangerous. McCluckie .was brought before the Court yesterday morning on a charge

of attempted murder, and was rendanded to Napier for eight days. The girl is making favourable progress towards recovery.
