Foxton Borough Council.

_. The ugual fortnightly meeting of Fjfehe Foxton Borough Council was held last night at 7.80 o’clock. Present—His Worship the Mayor, and Crs Speirs, .Symons, Gower, Bal'ip and Stiles. One tender was opened from Frank Dadson for ranging. Two applications for the position of Fire Inspector wore received. The Mayor read the applications from Messrs R. Noonan and C. Spring. Or Baker said he would like the lull Council to consider the appointment, and as four councillors were absent he thought the matter might be deferred. Cr Stiles said he favored the appointment of a thoroughly competent man. Proposed by the Mayor, seconded by Cr Symons, That the subject of the appointment of a Fire Inspector stand over till next meeting, and that specifications be prepared and applications called for the position, to be considered at the next general meeting. Carried. The Reserves Committee’s report was read, and dealt with as follows Resolved that the ends of the Cycling track in Victoria Park be limestoned and tarred, and that the Reserves Committee meet members of the Athletic Club as to what distance shall be done, also that the clerk write to the Palmerston Gas Works for prices of weed exterminator. The question of removing the band rotunda from the Park was left over for future consideration, also the matter of removing the triangle from South end of Main-street. The overseer was instructed to aee to fencing repairs required at the Ferry Reserve. Mp R. Gray waited on the Council and submitted the names of shrubs and" trees for planting in the Park, also putting in tenders respectively at £ls, and 5s per chain. Proposed by Cr Speirs, seconded by Cr Symons, That Mr Gray’s tender for planting box-thorn hedge along the fence on the top of the hill in Victoria Park be accepted, also the tender of Mr Gray for planting 300 trees and shrubs in Park as per tender be accepted. Carried. Proposed by Cr Baber, seconded by Cr Stiles, That the tender of F. Dudsqa for ranging be accepted. Carried.- : Letters were read from Mr Job Vile, in reference to Old Maori Cemetery, saying the Native Minister had found out the rightful owners of the Reserve, and further information would be sent after enquiries had been made. Mr Vile also said he had tabled a question in the House re freight on eggs. Mr Tennant, Oroua Bridge, wrote asking for 40 yards metal to be placed on trucks.—The Council decided they could not entertain the request. In answer to the Railway Department letter it was proposed by the Mayor, seconded by Cr Gower, That the Railway Department be informed that this Council will require one thousand yards of metal for the completion of streets, and one thousand stored till required. Carried. The discussion of formation of footpath and water-table in Robinson street mentioned in overseer’s report was held over, also the matter complained of as to state of Heta-street. Mr Henderson waited on the Council and asked if something could be done to give him better access to his house in Wharf-street. —lt was decided that the overseer have a platform with hand-rail ereeted. The overseer was instructed to have the tanka erected at windmill. The Mayor said his attention had been called to some bad holes in the road opposite Mr B. Spelman’s, but the matter was left in abeyance. Proposed by Cr Baker, seconded by Or Stiles, That the triangle at Northern end of Main-street be left in the hands of the Reserves Committee, to arrange with Mr Gray if possible, to come to terms to trim shrubs and keep flowers in order and remove weeds, etc., for 12 months Carried. j
