Mf VH*. addreestog the House of Representatives the question of reralsiioa of duties to various cities of the colony on electrical machinery, said It seemed* this question involved very large considerations—whether or not the local bodies of the country districts oi this colony were not deserving of some consideration in the construction of their local works. Some boroughs were laying down castiron pipes, which had to be imported, equally with the large cities of Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch and Dunedin. In the district which he had the honour to represent, the Manawatu County Council had constructed some miles of tramway, and some thousand of pounds’ worth of rails had been imported from America, and he believed the Government had been asked to give a remission of duty, but would not. He thought all these local bodies should be treated alike. The question whether the local authorities of the colony should have a remission of duties was a question this House ought to consider. Personally, ha did not favor any one particular body getting a concession unless the whole of the public bodies of this colony were similarly entitled.
