Palmerston Winter Show.

A GREAT SUCCESS. It is a difficult matter to estimate at its full extent the importance the town and district of th§ Show, but its inception doubtedly proved to be an epochmarking event in the commercial history of the town. One has only to enter the large Agricultural Hall and make even a cursory ‘inspection of the immense amount of machinery contained therein; to pass down the very large and fine display of high-class poultry; to visit the attractively arranged exhibits of produce, horticulture, and home industries; above all to hear the enthusiastic rem'arks of men who have followed every show of importance in the Colony for years, to adequately appreciate the fact that at Palmerston an exhibition has been made the like of which has never yet been witnessed in the Colony. Dairying is the chief industry of the district and the place of honour at the show has rightly been given to all its adjuncts and essentials. Therefore as .the number of mere entries in an exhibition of the present description, count very little, tabulated comparisons cannot be made. It is however pleasing to hear the enthusiastic comments of \ visitors from all parts of the Colony on the size and importance of the display; and it is no mere assumption to say that Palmerston -will henceforth be known not only for its Metropolitan Spring Show, but also for its great Winter carnival. It might also be remarked that Dunedin visitors &re most generous -md most enthusiastic in the praise of the Winter Show. > v On entering the main building the visitor views the length of the interior practically through a maze of machinery. In fact the whole upper portion of the building—comprising 4,500 feet—is devoted to .this display. Heavier, machinery is .arranged down the centre, and also those exhibits which are to be shown ip motion, as they are in the position more easily connected with the shafting, which supplies the motive power Down the entire length of the building and on either side are the exhibits of various firms, the Tines shown being chiefly connected with the poultry yard and dairy. The exceptional size of the display has already been alluded to, but as much apace again would have been occupied had it beep available. Beyond the machinery comes the poultry division. This in itself is" a show. .Over 600 birds are on exhibition, and it has already been stated that only those of the best quality are being shown. A large, number of the exhibits were penned, but the show was not completed until yesterday morning, when the judging commenced. The arrangements for showing the birds are excellent. In the next compartment are displayed the horticultural exhibits, which form a pleasing break in the prevailing characteristics of the show, while beyond these, again, the industrial sections are arranged. This room will be one of the most frequented of all, not only because through it entrance is gained to the tea room, but on account of the exhibiting made there of school industries, the housewife’s skill, cheese and butter displays, etc, \ mm—■—"■—mmmmm
