KING EDWARD AT BELFAST. % —— • Despite showers of rain, Belfast was gaily decorated on Tuesday in honour of the King’s visit. , Replying to an address from the orporation, the King said he hopo “ My people, while cherishing then own characteristics and ideals, may engage in that friendly rivalry in the paths of peace which is the trvv source of national prosperity and Imperial greatness.” Replying to fifty other addresses, King Edward said: “My highest ambition is to follow in my mother’s footsteps and work for the good of my people. The prosperity of Ireland and the maintenance of the peace of the nations will be my consent aim.” The King unveiled* the Victoria memorial statue and opened the new Victoria Hospital. An old woman, breaking through the cordon of soldiers, rushed to shake bands ’ with the King and Queen and was knocked down by the wheels of the royal carriage, which passed over her. The woman was seriously injured. Their Majesties were much distressed at the incident. The Standard asserts that King Edward will in September take the Marienbad cure, and will meet the Kaiser and the Czar at Darmstadt.
