A Judge of Brutal Assaults.
George Ward, on» of the- three* men by. whom Mr Lewie, Solomon was violently assaulted and robbed at Surrey Hills nearly four years ago, was sentenced to six years’ penal servitude at Sydney last week. In reply to a request that something might be taken off his sentence, Mr Justice Pring said he would not take an hour off. He was deter* mined to put down this form of brutal assault. It was simply monstrous that people could not walk in the streets in broad daylight with* out being assailed by ruffians who waylaid them like a lot of bushrangers. Ward, his Honor added, had acted like a thorough coward by breaking his bail in another.ease, thus forcing the woman who became his surety to go to gaol. That showed the sort of man he was.
