Slips in the Manawatu Gorge.

TRAFFIC INTERRUPTED. Between four and five o’clock on Monday afternoon a particularly heavy slip took place in the Manawatu Gorge, fully one thousand yards of debris coming down. Fortunately for traffic it came down after the mail train had got through, but the train leaving Palmerston at five and the incoming one at eight o’clock were blocked, and passengers, mails, and luggage had to be transhipped. Goods traffic is completely stopped. ‘ Tuesday’s trains from the east and west coast transhipped at the scene of the accident. The slip came dowrr where there

was a small one a few days ago, and it is the most extensive that has occurred for some time past. It is evident the Gorge will give the railway authorities plenty to think about for years to come. Hen were at once put to work clearing away the obstruction, and by relays good progress was made, but there is an immense amount to remove. Fortunately, the prevailing fine weather lessens the likelihood of any further slips for the present.— Standard.
