Makerua.
A correspondent writes to the Otaki Mail as follows:—The Makerua syndicate are employing some 350 men on their property, and the wages sheet runs into four figures every month. There were tw r o constables and twenty-five extra men sworn in this last two days to keep order among the crowd of men thronging the township, they having boon paid off through the Hoods.
The amount of drunkenness is increasing tremendously, and it is not safe for a decent man to walk along the public streets without being insulted on pay-night. There are over 70 men under canwas at Makerua, mostly all drainers. The amount of fines mulcted out of drunks’ pockets this last two months must be well into £IOO, the local J’s.P. having determined to put down turbulent behaviour with a strong hand. Up to the present their efforts seem of Tittle avail.
