Palmerston Opium Raid.

A LARGE QUANTITY FOUND. A considerable commotion was caused among the “ Celestial ” community of Palmerston yesterday afternoon by an unexpected and un* welcome visit the police paid to a Chinese establishment in Main-street With strong suspicions that a quanr tity of opium was secreted on the premises, Sergt. S agpoole had the building thoroughly searched; but although he came across evidences of the indulgence in the opium habit, it was not until the roof was reached that the police discovered that of which they were in search. Coming unexpectedly on a Chinaman who had got upon the roof through a small door, they found him busily engaged in secreting packages of opium under a tub, but even when surprised an attempt was made by the Chinaman to get rid of the opium, and an “ incident ” between him and Constable De Nprville on the roof caused considerable amusement to speceators in the vicinity of the building. The raid was one of the most successful of its kind that has ever been made in the Colony. Altogether 15£ packages were secured, making a total weight of nearly eight pounds. In addition to the opium, pipes for its use were found, and reclining couches were also noted. The opium and some of the pipes were secured by the police, and summonses will be issued against the responsible Chinese.—Times.
