A washer is wanted for the Crown mill.
A Pahiatua baker was fined £3 at the Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday morning for selling bread under weight.
In the course of the evidence in the case Sansbury v. Teare, heard in Wellington, a witness was called who gave evidence as follows: —Mr Jellicoe: You are the hatter for the Great Liberal Party ?—Witness : I am the hatter to everybody.—They are friends of yours ?—I keep my friends in my pocket, and when I get enough I put them in the bank.
On the application of a jilted lover, the Southwark Stipendiary ordered the girl in the case to return to the swain a 30s ring he had given her. “ She told me,” said the disconsolate youth, describing his dismissal, “ that she only had me for the holidays." A sad fatality occurred at Aramoho on Monday, when a little boy named Louis Patrick Brownie, aged four years, son of Mr James Brownie, was killed. The little fellow, with his sister, aged two, were swinging from the back of a spring trap, when it tipped up and fell on his chest, killing him instantaneously.
Mrs Hooper, a very old resident of Sandon, died on Tuesday in her eighty-eighth year. The Kumara- Times says :—Either Minorca fowls must be very valuable or some men have more money than they know what to do with, for it is reported that a trio of these black favorites were put up for sale by tender in Greymoutb, and were secured by a local fancier for £25. Several other tenders were received, the lowest being £l2 10s.
As proof of the extraordinary advance that is being made in London in incandescent gas lighting, it is stated that within the past few days as many as 18,000 lamps have been fitted on the incandescent system, or practically six-sevenths of all the public lamps in London, which number nearly 22,000. One gas company alone sells 730,000 mantles every year.
' The Steele-Payne Company perform to-night at the hall. Messrs Hickson and Reeve have acquired the engine lately used by Mr O, Gardner, and which will now be taken to Oroua Bridge for the purpose of bringing the green leaf to their m il by tram. The Feilding Poultry Association has decided to affiliate with the North Island Poultry Association. On Tuesday evening at the Public Hall the member for the district, Mr Job Vile, will deliver an address on the trip of the Parliamentary party to the South Sea Islands. His Worship the Mayor will take the chair at 8 o'clock, and admission will be free. The address should be a most instructive one, and will no doubt be largely attended. Last night the Fitmaurice Gill Company performed at the Public Hall to a good attendance. “ The Sign of the Cross” was staged most elaborately, but owing to lack of stage room the company were not seen at their best. Mr Chas. Blake as Marcus, and Miss Gill as Mercia were perfect in their parts, and the other members of the company weie also good. It is probable the company may pay Foxton a return visit. The Foxton Borough Council hold a meeting on Monday evening for geneial business. Mr J. Vile, M.H.R., will also be present by invitation to ascertain the requirements of the town. A man named George Marriner, charged with deserting his wife at Foxton, has been arrested at Bulls and will be brought before the Court at Palmerston on Mondays The Daily Express is responsible for the item that a man in the United States had recently married his fifth wife. The four previous sharers of his joys and sorrows were the mother and three sisters of his present bride. This is probably a unique compliment to the virtues, if not to the staying power?, of Mint particular group of “ the sex,” bat we are curious to know at what stage in the narrative the mother came in. A letter received from the treasurer of the New Zealand Band states that the Band landed in England in excellent form, having held successful practices throughput the voyage. Bandsman Staines was taken seriously ill early on the voyage and typhoid (ever surfeited. An inquest held at Waitotara on Tuesday upon the body of a woman found last Sunday tlpoti the sea beach at Waitotara failed to disclose the ' name of the deceased or the actual cause of death. The body had probably bean in the water for several weeks, and no external evidence of drowning could be found. There were no marks of violence, no scars, no deformity. The body was well nourished, and the clothing of unusflally good quality. A striking circumstance was the fact of the body being without the outer garments—skirt and : bodice. The brooch, fastened at the neck of an inner bodice, has the name (?) “ Souitini F,” lightly scratched upon the cameo. There will be a special evangelistic service in the Methodist Church tomorrow night. Sister Amy will deliver an address and Mrs Hunter will sing. That portion of the Consumptive Sanatorium at Cambridge which is devoted to male patients is now full, whilst the accommodation for female patients is to be enlarged, as that side ot the building is rather small for the number seeking admission. Already two patients have left the homo cured. The Eketahnna Express is of the opinion that it is a moral certainty that the days of the totalisator are numbered. The people are coming to recognise the obvious injustice of pro secuting Chinamen for playing fan tan, whilst men, women and children are encouraged by the State to squander their substance on the totalisator. If gambling in any shape or form is light, it should not be restricted to the one channel. Our virtuous Legislature has declared that it is criminal to gamble. That being the case, it is morally wrong that the totalisator should be licensed. The matter will probably form the subject of a warm controversy in the House during the coming session. A tragic incident happened at a cycling competition at the Hamburg Velodrome. The winner of the Spring handicap, a rider named Roessler, crowned with an enormous laurel wreath which he had won, was riding a final lap of honour round the track amid the frenzied enthusiasm of the public, when he collided with a motor pace-maker and was thrown against a sharp-edged iron stake. The unfortunate man cut himself from the top of his skull to his chin, and was carried in a dying condition to the hospital.
