The Servians have succeeded in attracting a deal of attention to them by their summary manner of adjusting their political differences. About 1200 years ago the Servians came from the Carpathians and settled in the regions known as Servia, and succeeded in founding a great state, but in 1389 the Turks crushed the Servian power and made her first a tributary and then a pashalik of the Ottoman Empire. National risings in 1807 and 1816 secured many advantages and after the Russo-Turkish war gained complete independence and became a kingdom with a heridatory sovereign. Tha inhabitants are essentially agricultural and are well-built and stalwart, proud and martial by temperament. The country is • situated in the Balkan Peninsula, south of the Danube, and borders on Bosina, Hungary, Eoumania, Bulgaria and Turkey. The country is mountainous, and comprises 18,757 square miles with a population of 2,500,000. The army, on a peace footing numbers 18,000 men with 186 field guns. Education is compulsory and free. The King just assassinated succeeded his father in 1889 and married Madame Draga ne6 Longnevice. The trouble is considered to be purely local, but with the ancient feud against Turkey the trouble in Macedonia may lead the Servians to attempt an increase of territory.
