Mr Thomas Mason, of the Hutt Valley, died early on Thursday morning at his residence at Taita, when within a month of his eighty-fifth birthday. Mr Mason was one of the oldest settlers in this district, for he arrived in Wellington from England in 1841 by the ship Olympus, and on landing took up his residence in the Hutt Valley, where he lived ever since, except during the period of a brief trip to Tasmania. The quartely .meeting of the officials of the Methodist Church ,was held in the Parsonage last night. There was a good attendance. The report of the work for the past quarter was very cheering. The Circuit Steward’s report showed that the income had met the expenditure. It was decided to have the Foxton church painted, a subscription list being opened in the meeting for that object, and very liberal subscriptions were promised. The local preachers and stewards were heartily thanked for their valuable services during the quarter, and the Circuit and Society Stewards were reappointed. The Rev, W. Harris spoke of the visit of Sister Amy, and expressed a hope that her mission, which commences to-morrow, will result in great blessing to the Churches.
