Somaliland.
In 1881 a Protectorate was declared over part of Somaliland, now subject (except where reserved by Great Britain and Italy) to Abyssinia, and forming the north-eastern bora of the African continent. The British Protectorate contains about 80,000
square miles. I’ho population consists mainly of’ Somalis, a Mahommedian tribe. The boundaries are defined by treaty with Abyssinia and Italy. Trouble arose in 1902 through a rising under the “ Mad ” Mullah, and the British arras experienced a reverse, which delayed further advance until lately on the arrival of reinforcements from India.
Tho country is apparently an undulating plateau, in very many parts parched and barren. , Game and wild animals are generally plentiful) The river Juba makes the southern frontier of the Protectorate.
