Earthquakes in Victoria.
A very severe earthquake occurred on Tuesday at Warrnambool. The shock caused great conaternatioo, the inhabitants rushing from their houses and shops into the street. , : The direction of the. shock was from south-west to north-east. It lasted about ten seconds, and was accompanied by a loud rumbling
noise. , * The children i a the State SQaaoi stampeded in a fright, • . A massive stone cross on the turret of St. John’s Presbyterian ChuMb was dislodged and crashed through the roof. , , , The Town Hall received a good deal of damage, the ceilings falling, while one walFwaa cracked right through. . A number of chimneys in private houses were thrown down. _ The shock was severely felt at Port Fairy, although at Koroit, halfway between Warrnambool and Port Fairy, it was not felt at all. Earthquakes have been felt at Georgetown (129 miles north of Adelaide) and at Gladstone , (five miles further north). At the former place the shock was accompanied by a loud report. There was a sharp vibration, lasting-for three Of font seconds.
