King Edward at Portugal.
King Edward arrived at Lisbon on April 3rd in brilliant weather. British and Portuguese warships escorted his Highness up the Tagus. King Carlos, who was aboard a royal galley manned by eighty oarsmen, boarded the British Royal yacht and gave King Edward a welcome. The interview lasted an hour and a half. After the interview, further salutes word fired as their Majesties left for the shore, followed by a procession of historic barges which in turn was accompanied by a flotilla of steamers. There was a scene of indescribable enthusiasm at the landing of their Majesties. A stately procession Was formed, the Royalties receiving one long ovation. Thousands of people came from the provinces to the city. The decorations wore of the costliest character, balconies being hung with rich embroidery. Windows were hired at £l5O each. The city and warships were brilliantly illuminated at night, and there were general rejoicings. After luncheon at the Pena Palace, King Edward received the diplomatists living at Lisbon and deputations from the Cortes. Responding to the address from the Chamber of Peers, his Majesty recalled the memories associated with Torres-Vedras a town twentysix miles north of Lisbon, where during the winter of 1810-11 the Anglo-Poriuguese army, commanded by the Duke of Wellington, fought against the French under Marshal Messtna. “Happily," added hia Majesty, “ both countries now enjoy relations with their former foe. His Majesty went on to remark that an alliance dating many centuries back had been renewed and confirmed. It could only tend to peaceful development of Britain and Portugal and their colonies. King Edward has taken a holiday excursion to Cintra, a summer resort thirteen miles from Lisbon.
His Majesty visits Gibraltar on Wednesday. He proceeds thence to Marseilles and to Baris, staying five days at'the British Embassy.
