The London County Council is asking for power to borrow eighteen millions and a half within the next eighteen months. To-day the N.Z. Loan and M. A. Co., advertise a clearing sale of furniture at the Motoa estate, in conjunction with Messrs Abraham and Williams. The sale is fixed for next Wednesday at one o’clock. It has been arranged to attach British officers to the Japanese Army for duty. Later on Japanese officers will be attached to the British Army in Britain.
The Chief Justice gave judgement in the action brought by the Wellington Racing Club against S. Lewis, bookmaker, for trespass on the Hutt racecourse. His Honor held that under its lease the club had the right to frame regulations to prevent bookmakers from carrying on the calling at Hutt racecourse.
Earthquakes are being experienced at Cuneo, in Northern Italy. Three earthquakes occurred at Derbyshire, by which the ceilings of houses were cracked and fireplaces dislodged. The inhabitants of Leek rushed into the streets alarmed. The shocks were felt at Nottingham, Stafford, Sheffield and elsewhere.
Practically,” said Mr Beetham, S.M., at the Christchurch Magistrate’s Court, “ and (he added) the sooner it is known the better.—there is no such thing as judgment summons except in the case of fraud. The reason is that no one can prove that a man has got any money in his pocket, because a man never has any in his pocket. It is not sufficient to prove that a man has any money; it must be shown that he still has it.”
There is nothing like forgiveness. A man, while suffering from influenza in South London, was surprised by the sudden appearance in his room of his wife who, 20 years ago, eloped to California. Falling on her knees she implored his forgiveness, the man with whom she took fl ight, after making a fortune, having recently died. The husband forgave her. She nursed him so well that he recovered, but she caught the influenza herself, and died, leaving him £62,000. Lord Methuen has made steady progress towards recovery since the operation he underwent lately, and is able to take horse exercise again. There is now no question as to the gallant and popular general being fit to resume in due course, the duties of his profes sion, to which he has been so devoted throughout his long and honourable career,
The entertainment which is to bg held ia the Foxton Public Hall on the evening of Tuesday, 14th April, on behalf of All Saints’ Church fund, promises to be a great success. Several ladies and gentlemen from outside have kindiy offered their services for the occasion, and as it is desired to make the programme as attractive as possible, the addition of new performers will ba appreciated. It is reported at Potsdam that the King and Queen of England are expected to visit Emperor William during the coming summer. In Miss L. Cook’s stationers window is shown a very fine grown cucumber measuring over eighteen inches in length. It is from the garden of Mr F. Cook. Messrs Abraham and Williams advertise the first entries for their Palmerston stock sale. The Borough Council at a special meeting held on Wednesday evening confirmed the Burgess List, which is now in the printer’s hands. At the Justices’ Court on Friday Ernest Howan and George Wakefield pleaoed guilty to stealing grapes from S. H. Baker's vinery, and were convicted and fined 20s and costs, and ordered to pay the damages to Mr Baker 355. Dr Bennett and Mr Hennessy were the J.’s P. The Town Clerk proceeds to Wellington on Monday in connection with business for the Council, one of which is to interview Superintendent Hugo as to the necessary fire appliances needed for the Borough. Owing to the sand drift at the Pilot’s house it has been determined to move the houses to neaf the Sanatorium Cottages, and in the meantime the pilot and his family are occupying Mr Andrew Jonson’s cottage at that place.
