Escape of a Prisoner.
A man named William Webster who was arrested last Saturday for drunkenness at Gisborne made an attempt on bis life in a police cell on Sunday morning by inflicting a jagged wound on his throat with the handle
of a pannikin, and opening a vein in bis arm with a brass buckle torn Irom his waistcoat. After a severe struggle he was overpowered and placed in a straight-jacket, and he has been closely watched ever since. He appeared convalescent yesterday, but for safety s sake was strapped down to his bunk last night. . . During the night, however, Webster succeeded in wrenching out the ringbolts to which he was tied, and on Constable Crawford, the night officer, going to the cell at 3 a.m., the prisoner pounced upon him with great force, knocking his head against the doorpost'and leaving him unconscious, in which state he was found a short time later. Webster escaped clad m bis shirt. A hue and cry was raised, but BO trace of the runaway has been found* and it is believed he is in the river. Crawford was unconscious for some little time, having suffered a heavy shock.
