Manawatu Herald. SATURDAY, FEB. 14, 1908. The Maori Chmetery.
We congratulate the Council on making another step in the matter of improving the old Native cemetery. It is rather half-hearted and made in a manner as though Councillors feared they might succeed. This question we have brought before our readers on many occasions and we yet hope to see the matter carried to a successful issue. We would recommend the Council to secure the services of Mr John Stevens, our late member, as from conversations we have had with him we feel he could put everything in order.
The advantages to the town would be many, and after the concrol is obtained we would like to see a committee of townsmen selected to act with the Council in the laying out and beautifying the spot, and as much money will be needed we do not fear many voluntary subscriptions could be obtained in addition to the public funds. We urge that no time be lost in' securing the control of what appears at present to be, no man’s land.
