FOXTON v. LEVIN. On Saturday morning eight members of the local club started at 9 o’clock in Colt's drag to play the first match of the season, for them, against the Levin C.C. The weather was perfect and the drive to Levin most enjoyable. The visitors found the Levin pitch a perfect-one, beautifully made asphalt covered at both ends with cocoa-nut matting—an ideal pitch such as the good cricketer always hopes he will get to play on in heaven, only it will probably ba turf there. A similar pitch, we understand, is to be laid down this week in the Foxton school grouad by Mr Schlager, the Palmerston expert. Fortunate Foxton boys I As fully expected, the play on Saturday was very one-sided, the Foxton men not having yet got into any kind of decent form, while the Levin men have been playing all through the season. For Levin the brothers, Broughton, as usual, proved a tower of strength in the bowling-line, and as batsmen McKenzie and Farrington are good enough for a rep team. The bowling of FoXton, to put it mildly, was not strong, and the only one of the local men to get into double figures was the veteran, W. Nye. But the return match, which is to be played in about three weeks at will put a different complexion on affairs. The local players are now prepared recognise the necessity and beauty Jof practice. The teams were captained respectively by Messrs Reade and Butt, and the game was played throuhout in the friendliest spirit. Needless to say, the visitors were most hospitably entertained and Mr Hannan fully maintained the high reputaion of his excellent hotel. We append the scores, which show that Levin won on the first innings by 133 runs. Levin, 176 : Foxton, 4«.
