New Zealand Hemp in London.
In a report to the Agent General under date 24th December, handed us by Mr T. E. Donne, Secretary ot Industries and Commerce, Mr H. 0 Camerom, Produce Commissioner in London, has the following to say regarding the market for New Zealand hemp: — Since my last report the hemp market may be said to have been iteady. As I have previously informed you, a considerable amount . of speculation is introduced by 1 dealers into transactions in hemp, and consequently that tendency has had the usual effect on the market of making slight rises and falls. Apart from this, however, the market mat'be said to. have been unusually regular, and good prices
averaging somewhat near £33 per ton, have been realised for spot parcels of “ good fair Wellington.” The quantity offering has nob been large, neither has the market been brisk, still a fair amount of business has been put through. Manufacturers have not been keen purchasers. Their trade is reported as having been slack. They have therefore, only made purchases as far as possible for actual requirements. From all I can gather, I anticipate that steadiness, with payable prices, will continue for some time to come.
