The great scheme for supplying the goldfields with water is now anaccom..ojlshed fact. a red-letter On the previous day dcfO t.ams Conveyed Sir John Forrest (teneral Defence Minister), Sir Wiliiam Lyne (federal Home Secretary), Mr Reid and other members of the federal Parliament and a large number of visitors Ljm Perth. The influx was so great that many had to sleep in the trams and in tents. The town was gaily decorated* and there was much enthu* ybunif
Sir John and Lady Forrest’s carriage drawn by twenty-four schoolboys, hea.ded an imposing procession. The ceremonies of turning on the water at the various centres were performed by Lady Forrest and the Mayesses of Coolgardie, Kalgoorlie and Boulder City, and that of turning it into the great dam by Sir John Forrest. Water is now everywhere abundant in the townships at ninepence per hundred gallons, instead of, as previously, three shillings and sixpence and upwards per hundred gallons tor condensed.
