Foxton Racing Club.

RECORD MEETING. President—F. Robinson. Vice-president—E. S. Thynne. Treasurer—F, E. Jenbs. Judge—W. H. Hartgill. Handicapper—J. E. Henrys, Clerk of the Scales—J. Cummerfield. Timekeeper—A. ET. Nixon. Clerk of the Course—A. Symons. Starter —T. Cameron. Stewards and Committee-*-W. Robinson, J, F, Overend, W. Purcell, W. Barber, H. Thynne, J. Symons and 0. Robinson.

The officials and Secretary of the Foxton Racing Club are to be congratulated on the very successful Summer meeting held during the last two days The Club has been successful in putting up a great record in every particular—in the number of nominations, and in the acceptances; in the sum realised for the privileges, in the attendance, and in the amount put through the Totalisator.

The meeting must eventuate in a substantial balance to the club. The two days were fine and hot, and the attendance on the first day must have been close on 3000 and on the second day from 1500 to 2000. The Sandon Tram brought over 150 people on the first and half that number on the second day, and the train from Feilding was composed of 16 carriages and trucks, all long ones, and had two engines. The number was estimated at 1500 on the first and the second day about 1000.

Large numbers of Maoris attended and there were as many as 40 vehicles by the rails. It was very evident that the purchasers of the priveleges had a royal old time, as the booths were packed all, : day, and all, even the gate holders admitted they had done well, though £IOO had been paid for the outside gates and £lO5 for the lawn. Though the cards fetched £SO at auction the buyer had disposed of all too early in the day the lack of necessary books was much commented on.

The secretary, Mr J. R. Whyte, had his hands very full of work, Which be attended to in his usual quiet, genial, methodical manner, which made an onlooker imagine be was having a very easy time, but the business of a Racing Club’s secretary, has, of late years, developed into a regular banker’s business, which adds very materially to his work. Mr A. Keith was his assistant and did his work promptly and most satisfactorily. Though the club has had an exceptionally good meeting, favoured by wonderful weather, it must be remembered that the foundations ol a succesiful meeting hare to

be laid long before a meeting takes place, therefore Mr Whyte is to ha credited With a large share of the

praise. Mr Tom Cameron was the starter and was extremely fortunate in bis starts, moat of them being perfect, and quickly effected. Mr Gillies, the judge, had some close finishes to decide, but none about which there was any question. He was assisted by Mr Lloyd, at his wish. The handicapper, Mr J. E. Henrys, proved again how well he can natch his fields, as the horses kept all together almost to the winning post. The racing was particularly good, atd it was remarked, by men who understand, the numbers ol thorough good horses that were present. To show a sample of the handicapping in the January Hack race there were 5 horses competing and they finished in the exact order they had been handicapped. Mr George Gray took charge ol the scales on the first day, assisted by Mr James Symons, and the second day Mr Symons attended to the matter, with the assistance of Mr Overend.

Mr Heta made a capital clerk oi the course being careful and courteous.

The stewards, one and all, lent their bast aid, with the satisfactory result obtained.

The Totalisator was in charge of Messrs Neylon and Spriggins and they put through, in the two days, close on to £13,000. a record of over £IOOO to that of any previous meeting. Mr Goodall, of Rangitikei, took charge of the machine book, and was accurate and prompt in his declaration of the dividends. The Foxton Brass band under Mr Betty played a number of selections during the days. The Messrs Langley Bros, who had the dining-room and refresh* ment booth sustained their names of premier contraotors and supplied an excellent luncheon which was very much approved of The racing, as we have said, was excellent, there being no protest or complaint throughout, the jumping at the hurdles being all taken clean. Following are results* FIRST DAY.
