Manawatu County Council.

The ordinary meeting was held on Wednesday. Present: Crs J. G. Wilson (Chairman}, J. R. McLennan, Tbos. Masters, T. P. Clark, F. Carter, P. Robinson, H, Hammond. The inward correspondence was dealt with as follows ; From 0. R. Caverhill and eleven other ratepayers, requesting Council to raise a loan of £4OO to construct Karikari drain road and continuation of Poxton-Shanaion road, as far as G. Gower’s, the special Kite to be struck over' the Awahou riding.— Steps to be taken as requested. From F. H. Vile, offering to supply dog collars at 6d each.—-Tenders to be invited, also for collection of dog tax. From H. Claris, Poxton, offering to purchase a small piece of land adjoining the Elkihs-Motuiti road.— Mr Claris to be asked to make an offer, but sale cannot be made until legal formalities in connection with road are completed. Prom Bell, Gully and Cooper, on behalf of Mrs McLennan, the vendor of the Oroua Downs estate, requesting the Council to urge chief surveyors to close the old roads and consent to the plan showing new -ones. —As soon aa surveyor’* plans approved, necessary action to be taken. From seven residents of Mickeytown requesting that place be renamed and suggesting Hammondville. The Council decided on Makowhai, the name of the creek adjoining.

Prom J. Miller, for lease of suffi - oient land near tram line to erect store-room. - Granted subject to Council's conditions.

From T. E. Loach, Utiku, offering sleepers placed on trucks at 3s each, posts at £5 per hundred aod strainers at 7s each. R. A. Heisfl offered sleepers at same rate. Prom Horowhenua County Oouri* cil With copy of resolution passed by meeting of ratepayers to the effect that Mauawatu County Council ought to proportionate cost of land required for approach to proposed Shannon bridge, notwithstanding the promise that it would be borne by the Toko* maru riding of the Horowhenua County. , . Prom Job Vile, asking permission to fence the road leading to Bangitikei river below tram line. He would erect a gate to allow gravel to be carted and stock to be taken to water.' Permission given. From G. 0. Perry, W* Kdsby and P, Brady, Oroua Downs, requesting that loan of £SOQ be raised to form and metal road to their sections.— Attended to. From G. C. Perry and four other# asking that tram line siding be laid down between Oroua Downs and Taikorea,—Applicants may lay one down at their own expense. Traffic would not warrant Council doing 80.

The Manager of Tramway reported total receipts for December were £223 2a 9d and expense# which included £64 6s 8d for rails and fastenings were £195 11s Id, leaving a credit of £27 11a Bd. The following was a summary of the goods carried : 32 tons of grain, 69 of mineral, 67 merchandise, 67 of hemp, 46 of manures, one truck Of chaff, 15 of green flax, 143 of metal and clal, 2 of firewood and 3of pigs, 779 bales of wool, 20,878 ft, of timber and £4 17s Id received in fares. The Council discussed the question of the price of coal earned on tramline. The Chairman pointed out that if the price was rendered excessive coal required at Bulls, and even at Sandon, would be brought by way of Wanganui, and the traffic to the tramway would be lost. It was stated that as high at £2 7s 6d per ton had been paid by a resident of Sandon.—Matter left to Chairman.—Advocate.
