Killed by a Train.

A sad fatality took place at the Palmerston railway station yesterday, when Alexander Buchan, head storeman on the railway staff, met his death by a shunting accident. In some unaccountable way Mr Buchan fell- between two carriages which were being shunted, with the result that his right leg was cut off at the knee and nearly severed at the hip. Death was almost instantaneous. Deceased was very popular, and was a prominent member in the Masonic and several friendly society lodges. He joined the railway service in 1879. Deceased, who was about fifty years of age, leaves a widow and daughter. [The late Mr Buchan was one of the staff at the local railway station some years ago, where he made many friends by his courtesy and obliging manner in carrying out his duties, and who all regret his_sad end.]
