It says“ New Zealand is sending a brass band to give a series of concerts in this country. This is a of colonial enterprise and patriotism which does not arouse our enthusiasm. When it comes to peripatetic brass bands we are Little Englanders, and we look with a great deal of apprehension on this new zeal and torture. An illustration of the rush of emigrants to South Africa is given in the fact that the big liner Delphic, at present on her way from London to New Zealand has 264 passengers for the Cape and none at all tor this colony.
Saccharine obtained from tar is 220 times sweeter than cane sugar, and is used in sweetening and preserving jams, fruit preserves, and jellies. Un like ordinary care sugar when soused, it is not liable to mould or ferment. On the other hand, it does not fatten or nourish the body, and in certain ailments is therefore recommended by doctors for sweetening coffee, tea, and other beverages, in places of the ordinary cane sugar.
