The French Labour Troubles.
RIOTING AT MARSEILLES.
The plumbers, butchers, cabinetmakers, bootmakers and dockers’ societies at Marseilles have voted in favour of a general strike. The bakers at Marseilles have struck. The army bakers will replace them. Owing to some gangs o! labourers resuming work on the quays, the dockers interfered, and compelled the police to retreat. The Commissary of Police was wounded in the face during the struggle. TP gendarmerie then charged, and dispersed the mob. Fifteen men were arrested, who were armed with knives.
The military occupy the thoroughfares leading to the dock*, and free labourers are being protected. At a meeting of eight thousand naval reservists and dockers, the Government was censured and the *
withdrawal of troops demanded. Violence was threatened in return for the brutality of the police. The shipowners are urging the Government to punish the reservists, inasmuch as they are deserters*
