Alleged Slander.

On Friday afternoon the Chief Justice and a jury of 12 commenced the hearing of an action in which William James Dennett sought to recover £5Ol damages from William Thomson for alleged slander.

Defendant is minister of Scots Church, Wellington, an independent organisation, and was formerly a minister of the Presbyterian Church. Plaintiff is a builder, and was at one time superintendent in the Sunday School connected with defendnnt’s church. It was stated that plaintiff became engaged to a female teacher in the Sunday School. In August defendant is alleged to have sought to break off the engagement, and made a statement that plaintiff had indecently assaulted a little girl. The defence was a denial that the words were spoken, and that if they were used they had been uttered by the defendant in honest belief in their truth.

The case stood partly heard when the court rose, and next day the jury found for defendant on one charge and for plaintiff a farthing damages fo>- libel.
