The Election.

RETURN OF MR JOB VILE.

On Tuesday the election of a member for the Manawatu Electorate was held, the two members being, the late representative, Mr John Stevens, the Government Whip, and Mr Job Vile, a late arrival at Sanson and a supporter of the Opposition. The two Foxton committees worked hard for each candidate, though the struggle was carried on in excellent spirit. One think very soon came in evidence, and that was the shameful state of the mils. Many men, old residents of the town, who had voted at the last election, found themselves disfranchised, by having been struck off the roll by somebody. A large number of persons, residents in the district had not been placed on the roll, the result being a shortage of the number usually polled at the local booth.

Mr Alf. Fraser was the deputy returning Officer and very great praise is due to him for the despatch he showed in declaring the results, and in forwarding the same to the Returning Officer at Marton. We believe the Foxton result was the one first known. The poll closed at six o’clock and 6.36 Mr Fraser gave us the following results ; John Stevens 229 Job Vile IS6 Some time afterwards Mr Thos. Westwood the Deputy Returning Officer for the Local Option Poll declared that: —
