A Caution to Butchers.
It is strange how little attention is given by butchers to the duties laid, down for their guidance in “ The Slaughtering and Inspection Act, 1900.” The Government have appointed Inspectors, and right up the coast the Department have been suing butchers for their omissions. At the Magistrate’s Court on Saturday Inspector Duncan proceeded against both the local butchers for breach of sub-section 2 of clause 51, which is—lt shall not be lawful for any person owning or having charge of swine, to feed them with any meat or offal unless such meat or offal be first boiled. Both butchers pleaded guilty and were fined only £l, and seven shillings costs each. We understand that the Departments intends the clause of the Act to bo obeyed, and in this instance did not press for the .full penalty, which is for any offence under the Act not exceeding £SO, and for the second and every subsequent conviction shall by the Court be indorsed on the license, and on a third or any subsequent endorsement within any period of two years the Court may cancel the license.
