Convicts at Large.
There are no farther tidings of the four prisoners who overpowered the warders at Hokitika and escaped on Monday afternoon. The search is being actively continued, all the available force being utilised in scouring the country. The locality in the direction the prisoners were last seen making for is pitted with numerous shafts, forming a source of danger to the unwary. The injured warders are not inc ipaoitated, and arc taking part in the hunt. Morgan who saw active service in South Africa, and had experienced of a few weeks’ detention at the hands of Do Wet, bad a fierce struggle with the prisoners. hey wrested his rifle from him, but he managed to retain the bayonet, which was wrenched off the gun. The escape has caused a good deal of alarm in the district. The escaped prisoners have separated. Three of them slept in a deserted hut at Kanieri Forks, six miles from town. They went into several diggers’ huts, and forced the men to give them provisions,- clothing, money and tobacco. No trace has been discovered of the fourth prisoner.
