Price of Timber.

Complaints have been uttered by (.some timber merchants that there Is a 1 combine of sawmillers in Dannevirke I and the contiguous districts, to force up the price of timber delivered in Wellington. The assertion is made that these millers are diverting large quantities of timber to Christchurch, and at the same time alleging that they are unable to supply Wellington demands, the idea being to create an impression in this city that the demand for timber exceeds the supply. Locally there is a disposition to resist any attempt further to raise prices, and as a counter move there is talk of instituting direct importation to Wellington of timber by sea from other centres of sawmiiiing.
