Funeral of M. Zola.
. Enormous,' respectful crowds attended the funeral of the late M. Zola, who was buried with military honours.
The funeral was one harmonious apotheosis of Zola and the justice of a cause nobly championed. Trib tes to the memory of the deceased were paid by M. Chaumine (Minister for Education) and M. Anatole France.
The latter recalling reactionary howls of rage, remarked that M. Zola was the embodiment of mankind, and his conscience did well never to despair of justice in France, which was a land of reason and philanthropic thought. The consequences of his action in the Dreyfus affair would prove of incalculable benefit.
The funeral corts|£: included the Prince of Monaco, representatives of the Premier and the Minister for War, trade unions carrying a silver palm inscribed “ Germinal—Travail Fecondite.”
Captain Dreyfus—who Madam » Zola had released from his promise not to attend —joined in the funeral but passed unnoticed beca se his presence was unexpected. Colonel Picquart, Maitre Labori, M. Jaures, the Socialist President, M. Eeinach were the objects of re- .
peated- ovations. Ten thousand people followed M. Jaures homewards, cheering.
