The town of Shannon has lor g been known as one of the sound st and most prosperous of the admirable settlements ah ng the line of the Wellington and Manawatu Company’s Railway. The recent purchase of the Makerua Swamp—an area of 13,000 aeres^ —by a weaHby syndicate and the large capital the synd oata company is about to expend in systematic draining and fitting the land for close settlement will in itself revolutionise the conditions of trade in Shannon. The diversion of the flood wafers of the river Manawatu is now the subject of seri ous discussion amongst the residents of the town of Shannon. Financial arrangements of an extensive character will pmbab y be made so as to enable from 100,000 to 150,000 acres of the low-lying land between Kereru and Longburn to be thoroughly drained. The vast importance of this great work, which may wall be re g>i rded as national work, to the town and district of Shannon has only to be mentioned to be undtrstood by those best acquainted with ihe Manawatu district.
