The Pope exclaimed: “If Zola was the Church’s enemy, iro' was frank. God rest his soul 1”
Widespread regret at the death of Emile Zola has been shown in Britain and Italy, owing to the late author having championed the cause of Captain Dreyfus. When the tidings of bar husband’s death were broken to Madame Zola? she shrieked out, and sobbed bitterly# afterwards sinking into a deep stupor. Captain Dreyfus visited M. Zola’s house and viewed tho deceased novelist lying in his coffin. Several of M. Zola’s friends claimed that he should be given a national funeral.
An anti-Dreyfus demonstration is feared.
