The Boer Generals.

Three European Governments recommend to the Boer Generals the wisdom of a conciliatory attitude towards Britain. t It is stated in Boer circles in Brussels that the Generals’ friends in London are hopeful of obtaining from the Government a part or the whole of the financial assistance to the Boers which was refused by Mr Chamberlain. Negotiations are proceeding. Advices received by the “Daily Telegraph ” from Belgium state that Germany is determined not to allow anti-British demonstrations. The Government has threatened that unless such demonstrations are avoided it will expel the Boer Generals. Possibly they will abandon their tour. Other advices states that the Boer Generals are dissatisfied with the prospects on the Continent, and prefer to rely on Britain’s generosity. They will return to South Africa at the earliest opportunity. The Daily Telegraph says that Belgium has also determined not to allow anti-British demonstrations, and threatens to expel the Boer Generals.

The Boer Auxiliary Society at Berlin will hand over to the Boer Generals the sum of £IO,OOO. The total subscriptions to the Boer Relief Fund amount to about £BSOO, including £IOOO subscribed in England.

Mr Reitz, in the course of a speech, •said “ The Generals have chosen the part of silence-—I speak out. I condemn Mr Chamberlain, not England. I will be friendly only if their country is given back to the Boers.” Comparatively poor subscriptions to the distressed Boers’ Funds are being received in Holland and elsewhere, and the movement is flagging. The figures recently given were exaggerated. The Boer Generals intend visiting Antwerp, Brussels and. the Dutch towns during the next few days. Burghers Jooate, of Klerksdorp, and Rood, of Ecmelo, are touring Great Britain at the expense of the Government to raise funds for farms and machinery. They will continue their journey to Canada and Australasia on the 28rd inst.
