Accident on the Manawatu Railway.
A serious accident took place on the Wellington and Manawatu railway which greatly interfered with the regular traffic. It appears ballasting operations are being carried on above Shannon and metal is obtained from the Levin pit. Yesterday the train left Levin as usual, pushing a long train of loaded ballast trucks, when just north of Shannon the axle of the first truck broke, causing the whole of the trucks to leave the line and upsetting the engine. The driver and stoker on the engine had a marvellous escape as the Craw bridge was crossed by the engine, not on the rails but on the sleepers, and fell just after the bridge was crossed. The line has been out about all ways, and some three chains destroyed, the rails being twisted up like bits of wire. The up-train from Wellington could proceed no further than the bridge, and the afternoon train was delayed at the other side of the bridge.
Passengers and parcels had to be transferred. It is hoped to have the line clear this morning, the work of clearing up the wreckage was to have been pushed along last night. Fortunately no person was injured.
